A Guide on Energy Efficient Homes

Pollution is a pertinent issue in many countries around the world. Every year, millions of people are affected by climate change thus putting their livelihoods and lives at risk. In the construction industry, environmentally friendly home designs have become popular in recent years. These designs encourage the use of sustainable materials, energy efficient systems, and water conservation. This excerpt aims to shed more light into eco-friendly home designs.

Building materials.

Consider using timber sourced from sustainably managed forests. In these forests, trees are replaced as soon as they are cut. The forest stewards also ensure minimal interference of the ecosystem when felling the trees. Use recycled steel, precast slabs, columns, and pillars to construct the structural members. Utilise durable materials such as PVC pipes for the plumbing and electrical works.

Air conditioning.

Below are a few ways to ensure sustainable air conditioning in your home.

  • Choose an air conditioner with a high-efficiency rating. Preferably, the air conditioner should have an economy mode, dehumidifier, and sensors.
  • Strategically plant trees to offer shade during hot days. Plant trees that shed leaves during the cold season to let sunlight into the house during winter.
  • Improve thermal efficiency by using insulation or dense materials such as concrete that absorb heat during the day and release it at night.
  • Double or triple glazed glass on your doors and windows will help control indoor temperatures.

Water management.

During construction, use curing agents on the cement to reduce the amount of water used to prepare concrete. Use proper equipment such as mixers that prevent water wastage when making the concrete. Wash the construction tools in a reservoir instead of using running water. Harvest rainwater and use it to clean clothes, floors, and irrigate the garden. Use water efficient shower and toilet systems in the house. Install automatic or low flow faucets to reduce water was tage at home. You can also have a rain garden to make use of stormwater.

Power.

Utilise renewable sources of power such as solar and wind. Solar water heaters can significantly reduce your power bills. The home design should allow sufficient penetration of natural light. As such, you do not have to light bulbs during the day. Use energy efficient LED lighting in your home and garden. Dishwashers, televisions, washing machines, and refrigerators should be energy efficient.

Environmentally friendly home design ensures that your home has a low carbon footprint. Sustainability should be incorporated during the construction phase and the general functionality of your home. Consider building materials, air conditioning, water management, and power.
